When patients come in that are nervous, and it's very understandable ... I have a high population of older patients during the winter here because they come to Arizona to just have the nice environment during the winter. Traditionally those patients have had experiences earlier on in life that have caused them a lot of anxiety at the dentist.
Some of the things we do when patients come in is, the first thing they notice is the office and how comfortable and natural and organic it feels. It doesn't feel cold and sterile. When they come into and sit down in the chair, we provide blankets for them. We help them to feel comfortable. Sometimes we'll use (inaudible). Basically, it's laughing gas, to be able to help them relax and feel comfortable in the chair.
We have a lot of options. We can do sedation where we put a patient to sleep if they're absolutely really nervous. The other thing that we can do, too, is pre-medicate or give the patient some medication before they come in to help them relax. Typically we ask that a driver bring the patient during those kind of visits. It helps to take the edge off.
I think most importantly is just the fact that we can be efficient with the technology we have in trying to get the patient in and out of the office and do accurate and just make the experience smooth for the patient. I think that plays a big role in reducing the anxiety level.
When you come in, we have great music. There are televisions with cable. They can sit down. Our chairs in every single room have massage units in them, so you can lay down and turn on the massage units. You can turn on your favorite cable channel and have a blanket. We have water and treats for you when you come. We do everything we can to help you feel at ease when you come to see us.
