Dentistry, it's a field where you get to kind of call your own shots. I have my own practice and I get to get, you know, I wake up in the morning and it's my choice to decide how my day is going to go, and how I want to plan my day. But what's most rewarding is being able to help and build relationships with people and families. That I will see their children, and they will grow up, and we see them through elementary, junior high, and through college. And just to be able to see that progression ... That's part of the human experience, and I get to see that firsthand and be part of it.
And most people, when they think about how they grew up, and they don't remember their physicians too much, but most people remember the dentist. Sometimes not for good reasons, but now, I think that things have changed a lot in dentistry and that we're having a lot more of a positive relationship with our patients.
Dr. Javier Portocarrero decided to become a dentist because he enjoys working with his hands and interacting with people. His favorite part of his job is the long-term relationships he is able to build with his patients. He enjoys seeing families grow and experiencing their milestones with them, such as graduations, new jobs, new babies, and retirements.
Dr. Portocarrero studied molecular cellular developmental biology at the University of California, Santa Cruz and then went on to earn his doctorate of dental medicine (DMD) from the Boston University Henry M. Goldman School of Dental Medicine. Dr. Portocarrero has been practicing dentistry since 2004.
Following dental school, he spent three years working for a dental corporation. His stint in corporate dentistry inspired him to go into private practice in 2008, serving patients of all ages to the quality dental care they deserve.
After almost 14 years of practicing dentistry, he has seen many changes in the dental field. To keep up with the latest and greatest in dental techniques and technologies, he attends regular continuing education courses at prestigious organizations like the Engel Institute in North Carolina. He has completed extensive training in various areas of dentistry, including:
- Dental implants
- Laser dentistry
- Sleep apnea treatment
In 2014, Dr. Portocarrero had a new dental office built. He is always looking for new ways to make the patient experience as pleasant as possible. He has put together an exceptional dental team, invested in advanced dental technology, and given his office a spa-like feel. He also provides various amenities for your comfort, including:
- Soothing waterfalls throughout the office
- Warm blankets and soft pillows
- Massage chairs in every care room
Outside of the office Dr. Portocarrero enjoys spending time with his family and their two Boston terriers, Cocoa and Pebbles. As a family, they enjoy traveling and experiencing new cultures.
