For many people in Mesa, sedation dentistry offers an effective way for them to overcome any fears they have about dental procedures. At Alluring Smiles, sedation is always administered by a dentist or board-certified nurse. About Nitrous Oxide
Nitrous oxide is an odorless, colorless gas administered alongside oxygen. For dentistry, it is inhaled through a ‘cap’ that sits overtop the nose. Nitrous oxide causes sedation and a feeling of euphoria. Patients are still able to communicate, but they are quite relaxed and sometimes experience a dream-like state. The gas leaves the body completely in three to five minutes. You do not need an escort and can safely drive yourself home.
About IV Sedation
IV sedation is deeper than nitrous oxide. Contrary to popular belief, you are never asleep during dentistry-level IV sedation. Amnesia is a common side effect, however, and most patients do not remember what happened. Other patients will remember snippets of conversation. It is often described as one minute, you are waiting for the procedure to start, and the next, it is over.
Is It Safe?
All sedation is performed by a board-certified nurse or dentist. Under our care, sedation is a safe and comfortable experience. Nitrous oxide is widely recognized as the safest method of short-term anesthesia available. There are few contraindications, meaning it is safe to use in almost any situation. However, if you have compromised breathing abilities, you may not be able to use it.
While still very safe, IV sedation is heavier than nitrous oxide and has a few more contraindications. If you have breathing trouble, a depressed central nervous system or severe liver or kidney disease, it may not be available. Neither form of sedation is approved for pregnant women.
We offer sedation dentistry services to the Phoenix Metro Area, including Mesa and Tempe, as well as other parts of Arizona. For more information on sedation dentistry or our other dental services, we invite you to contact us online or by phone. Use our online contact form or call (480) 454-7400.
