Fight the Infection with Gum Disease Treatment

There’s been a lot of research done on gum disease in the last 10 years. What we’ve found is that there’s a link, a direct link between gum disease and systemic problems such as heart disease, strokes, diabetes and even early premature births. It has to do not so much with the bacteria involved with gum disease but with the inflammation. Inflammation is one of the biggest enemies to our bodies whether it’s in our mouths, in our joints, what it really does is your own body is destroying itself. What we do in our practice to treat gum disease, depending on the severity of the gum disease, usually we do what we call the deep cleaning. The deep cleaning involves making you very comfortable and making sure that you’re nice and numb so that we can clean where the gum disease is.

Gum disease does not live on your teeth. It lives under your gums. The best way to be able to treat that is to make sure you’re comfortable so that we can do a thorough job. Once we do that, you basically could put on what we call periodontal maintenance, which is just a maintenance where we see you more frequently for your followup cleanings. We also talk to you about what you can do at home to prevent the gum disease. In our practice, it’s very unique because we do use lasers as well to treat gum disease. The lasers we use, we use them to reduce bacteria. Lasers work really well to sterilize areas that have a lot of bacteria.

With lasers, were able to not just make mechanically clean, but we’re able to biologically clean where we can go in there and use the laser energy to kill bacteria and to also stimulate your own body to heal faster. That’s what lasers are good for. We pride ourselves in how we treat gum disease because we know that it’s not just a matter of having red and swollen gums but it could be a matter of life and death.
